Maldives

The most common response to when we say we've been to the Maldives is, "Where is that?"

So, where is the elusive Maldives? The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs.

This is a dream vacation which we saved and planned for well in advance. It is unbeatable and breathtaking! The crystal clear water and snorkeling are amazing. While there are many other island nations we look forward to visiting, Maldives was a short flight away from Sri Lanka. So, after a week of adventure in Sri Lanka, we took reprieve in Maldives for the rest and relaxation of a lifetime!

Once you arrive at the airport, you need to be transported to the hotel via a sea plane or boat. Our hotel was a fifteen minute speed boat ride away. When our boat pulled up to the island hotel (its own island) we were greeting by staff lined up and waving at us. Instantly, we were served refreshing mint juices as they began the check-in process. The most unique aspect of our hotel was the outdoor shower! The whole bathroom was private but open air. What an experience showing under the sun in the privacy of our own beachside cottage.

We spent our days enjoying the beach, snorkeling, paddle boarding, swimming in the pools and eating.

Roman is an avid snorkeler in the pool, but refused to snorkel on island. I made up for his disinterest and went out every day. There was a wall built around the resort we stayed at to keep the waves at bay and water calm enough to snorkel around. There were beautiful fish of every color, and even reef sharks.

One thing we did not manage to do on this vacation: take a family photo!
